The Bretton Woods Project works with civil society organisations and activists worldwide to monitor, challenge, and change the IMF and World Bank so that their impact on the poorest countries and the environment is improved. We are looking for an enthusiastic, motivated individual with proven research abilities, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and very strong networking and advocacy experience on top of a strong commitment to social justice, human rights and environmental sustainability. A. General information
About the Bretton Woods Project
The Bretton Woods Project seeks to challenge the power of the World Bank and the IMF, open policy space and promote alternative approaches. It is a small organisation established in 1995 by a network of UK development and environment non-government organisations (NGOs). The Project acts as an information provider, watchdog, networker and advocate. The Bretton Woods Project is an ActionAid-hosted project. Action Aid is a UK registered charity no: 274467. Role Purpose
The purpose of this role will be: to manage the project's work on the environmental, human rights and social impacts of World Bank policies and projects. Currently work on climate change finance and energy lending are among the most important issues in the portfolio. The role involves: strategic planning; directing and conducting research; analysis and writing on relevant policy issues; conducting advocacy, including at the highest levels of government and international institutions; writing accessible articles/briefings; facilitating network strengthening; and monitoring international institutions and the role of UK institutions in the World Bank. The role also involves serving on the management team of the organisation, which makes and implements financial, human resource, and strategic decisions for the Project. The Programme Manager line currently manages one Research Assistant, and may be required to supervise consultants and volunteers.

B. Key accountabilities
1) Monitoring and information provision (40%)
Monitor a set of issue, network and tracking briefs in relation to the World Bank to pull out relevant information, share it with interested partners and other beneficiaries, and investigate further details where necessary;
Write articles, briefings and short reports for the Bretton Woods Update and the Project website;
Ensure effective dissemination of papers and briefings in the environment / human rights / social impacts programme and assist with editing, proofing, layout and posting/distribution of Project publications and website;
Research into the interaction between the World Bank and the UK government and European institutions, including financial support, policy dialogue and influence etc;
Communicate our analysis to UK and other networks to raise the profile of selected issues with network participants and flag key opportunities for critical intervention.
2) Network strengthening (25%)
Facilitate communications of and share information with the UK-Bretton Woods Institutions network, the European IFI Network, and other issue-based networks;
Prepare and facilitate network workshops, and meetings of the networks with UK/European/IFI officials;
Maintain and strengthen contacts with UK, European and developing country civil society organisations
Maintain and strengthen contacts with UK, European and developing country governments and officials
Assist partners and colleagues with strategising and working on issue-specific campaigns and cooperate in advocacy efforts;
Respond to requests for information.
3) Research and advocacy (25%)
Select priority issues for project advocacy and lead advocacy efforts in relation to these, including developing advocacy strategies;
Support collective advocacy with other partners, including facilitating strategic planning and undertaking coordination work;
Direct and/or conduct original research into specific policy issues related to the World Bank within the programme portfolio (environment, human rights and social issues) and potentially on related issues such as agriculture, infrastructure etc
Commission/write longer briefings and papers;
Maintain contacts with relevant media and journalists for publicising policy analysis and reform recommendations;
Conduct advocacy, with partners when appropriate, at all relevant levels of policy making in the UK, Europe, and internationally.
4) Institutional strengthening (10%)
Serve on the management team for the organisation;
Contribute to strategic planning;
Lead relationships with selected key funders (related to the programme portfolio) including liaising with foundations and other funders, writing project proposals, ensuring reporting on project activities;
Line manage staff – currently one Research Assistant;
Contract and manage consultants, interns and volunteers as required;
As part of management team, oversee budgeting and expenditure;
Take on responsibility for a range of institutional responsibilities, as required, such as organising strategic planning days and staff evaluations.
C. Role-related knowledge, experience and skills
1) Knowledge
Essential
Educated to at least postgraduate degree level, or equivalent experience, with knowledge of development and environment issues.
Some specific study or work-related knowledge of the IFIs and/or one or all of the following: environment, human rights and development
Desirable
Knowledge of climate change and energy issues and/ or human rights, indigenous people's rights or women's rights
Understanding of North-South geopolitical debates on environment (particularly climate and energy) and human rights in multilateral forums
2) Experience
Essential
Researching and producing short briefings and longer papers on development/finance policy issues aimed at various audiences
Conducting advocacy with government or international institution officials, and developing advocacy strategies
Working with and coordinating NGO networks
Fundraising and/or reporting
Work experience in a developing country
Desirable
Experience with UK and/ or international NGO networks
Campaigning experience
Familiarity with government institutions working on development/finance/environment/human rights issues, particularly in the UK
Line management of other staff
Experience working with communities in the field in developing countries is highly desirable
3) Skills
Essential
Strong analytical skills and ability to develop sound policy positions
Excellent written and spoken communication skills
Computer literacy to a high level
Taking initiative and ability to take strategic leadership for programme area
Desire and ability to work cooperatively in a small team
Facilitating discussion and coordinating activities in a diverse network
Project management and delivering high quality outputs to agreed schedules

Other languages, especially Spanish and French
IT skills including with contact databases and content management systems
Budgeting and expenditure monitoring
4) Other essential:

Willingness to travel internationally up to six weeks per year
