Provincial Pharmacy Advisor at Vanderbilt Institute for Global Health

Background:

Under the leadership of the Provincial Health Director of Zambézia Province, the Pharmacy Advisor will provide technical and logistical assistance to the head of the Provincial Medication Depository Station, monitoring the entire needs quantification process, stocks control, and medication distribution to the health units. The advisor must work in coordination with provincial leaders to create control mechanisms and to encourage the rational use and adequate management of medication, preventing expired and accumulated stock. The advisor is also responsible for providing technical support to provincial pharmacy leaders and will work in direct coordination with the head of the Provincial Medication Depository Station.


Key responsibilities:

* Assist with defining and reporting of activities planning for provincial pharmacies.

* Assist with requisitions from the central level to the provincial level, via procedures established by the Mozambican Ministry of Health.

* Maintain communications with central level leaders to guarantee successful implementation of systems related to medication supply chain and logistics.

* Assist with the management of medications, diagnostic tests and other medical items.

* Collaborate in distribution plan goals and ensure timely delivery of medication to health units.

* Assist with the prevention of expired and accumulated stock, and supply interruptions.

* Ensure that the medication distribution process conforms to appropriate criteria.

* Assist provincial leaders to achieve a higher level of involvement and interaction between the pharmaceutical and clinical areas.

* Ensure appropriate and timely completion of medical warehouse stock records to comply with the national system.

* Assist with periodic reporting of statistical data and analysis of medication management.

* Provide supervision of monitoring and evaluation processes for medications, diagnostic tests and medical items in the province and assist with subsequent reporting to district authorities.

* Assist with continuing education, on-the-job training, and integration of health professionals at training centers.

* Promote observance of the rules regarding delivery of medications and their management in the provincial hospital and other health units.

* Assist in defining and/or restructuring appropriate physical spaces for pharmacies to allow for personalized patient care.

* Assist with the creation and/or maintenance of filing systems in the pharmacy for chronic patients.

* Assist the province in observing best practices of management and control of medications.


Qualifications:

* Masters degree in Pharmacy

* Minimum four years experience in pharmacy activities, with three in the public sector

* Two or more years of experience in developing countries (preferably in Mozambique)

* Solid knowledge about malaria, HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis

* Solid basic computer science knowledge

* Fluency in Portuguese
