The Centre on Housing Rights and Evictions (COHRE) is an international human rights NGO working to promote and protect the human right to adequate housing for everyone, everywhere. COHRE has regional programmes in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Established in 1994, COHRE is now an important voice in the global human rights movement.

Position Summary

The Programme Officer will take a lead role in the development and implementation of COHRE’s programme activities in Nigeria. The programme will focus on research and analysis of the housing rights challenges and violations – including forced evictions – in Nigeria and in the design and implementation of advocacy, capacity building and other activities related to the promotion and protection of the right to adequate housing. The Programme Officer will work under the supervision of the Regional Director and will support COHRE’s regional activities.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

* Research and monitor housing, land, property and related rights, including the prohibition of forced eviction in Nigeria and the region.
* Design, develop and implement advocacy, capacity building and programmatic strategies in Nigeria and the region, oriented towards the protection and promotion of housing, land and related rights. These strategies should respond to COHRE’s strategic goals and be formulated into an annual work plan.
* Draft and edit reports, public statements, training materials, briefs and others materials on housing, land and related rights in Nigeria and the region.
* Create and strengthen networks, partnerships and coalitions.
* Identify and pursue fundraising opportunities.
* Identify and contribute to communication and dissemination opportunities.
* Administrative and other tasks.


Qualifications

* A university degree in law, human rights, development studies, social sciences or other relevant discipline.
* Knowledge and a good understanding of country laws, policies, coalitions, and social movements as related to housing rights, land and evictions and/or economic, social and cultural rights.
* At least three years of professional experience in the human rights or housing rights field in Nigeria.
* Experience on research human rights advocacy and training.
* Excellent research, writing, analytical, communication and interpersonal skills.
* Fluency in English and the ability to work in a multi-cultural environment.
* Ability to work both independently and as part of a team, to deliver under pressure and meet strict deadlines.
