JOB DESCRIPTION
IITA is an international non-profit research-for-development (R4D) organization created in 1967, governed by a Board of Trustees, and supported primarily by the Consultative Group of International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). Our R4D is anchored on the development needs of sub-Saharan Africa.
We develop agricultural solutions with our partners to eliminate hunger and poverty by reducing producer and consumer risks, enhancing crop quality and productivity, and generating wealth from agriculture. We have more than 100 internationally recruited scientists from about 35 countries and 900 nationally recruited staff based in various stations across Africa.
The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture seeks suitable candidates for a position at its Headquarters in Ibadan.
Job Title: Field Assistant/Driver - Ibadan (2-year renewable contract)
Location: Ibadan Duties
Successful candidate will among other things perform the following:
- Drive with the Research Associate to the various locations, during planting, fertilizer application, data recording and harvesting
- Participate in all field operations, including planting, thinning, fertilizer application, data recording and harvesting in the various outside locations.
- Transport field worker to the various blocks in Ibadan at the time of pollination and harvesting.
- Supervise laborers during planning, thinning, fertilizer application, and harvesting
- Supervise weighing of plot yields in the various locations after harvesting and record accurate field weights in field books.
- Transport fertilizer and other farm inputs to the various locations in northern Nigeria when needed.
- Participate in seed processing, trial preparation and packaging before the main season.
- Drive with scientists to different locations and from airports and other locations as required.
- Perform any other duty assigned by supervisor
OND plus a minimum of 5 years driving experience and working with scientist in research fields is desirable.
The ideal candidate must
- Have good communication skills and be honest;
- Be able to follow instructions and work independently where necessary;
- Be available to work outside office hours, weekends and holidays.
