IANSA Survivors Network Coordinator at International Action Network on Small Arms (IANSA)

This post will coordinate and lead efforts to formalise the IANSA Survivors Network, to advance and enhance engagement of survivors of gun violence in advocacy, campaigns, policy development and small arms control initiatives. This role will also strengthen and increase the membership, activities and policy impact of the IANSA Survivors Network and the wider IANSA network.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under the ultimate direction of the Director, the Survivors Network Coordinator will:

1. Reach out to IANSA Network members and NGOs not yet members of IANSA to strengthen the membership, activities, publications and positions of the Survivors Network;
2. Convene and facilitate discussions with gun violence survivors around the world;
3. Develop national and regional survivor assistance strategies with IANSA members;
4. Conduct outreach to national disability rights organisations;
5. Produce and gather materials on topics related to survivors and small arms and acting as a focal point for policy on survivors and small arms;
6. Contribute to the IANSA website to become the primary online source of information on survivor advocacy on small arms control;
7. Compile and distribute a quarterly IANSA Survivors Network Bulletin
8. Ensure regular contact, updates and information exchange between Survivors Network members (as well as the wider IANSA network) by email, the website, use of social media, and the organisation of regional and global meetings;
9. Promote the priorities established by the Survivors Network at international and regional small arms fora to influence policy by organising side events and presentations, producing policy and information materials, and coordinating the participation of Survivors Network members;
10. Participate in meetings and fora with donors, IANSA members, governmental and intergovernmental organisations, the media, the business/commercial sector and potential partners;
11. Represent IANSA and the Secretariat whenever necessary including at meetings, in media interviews and providing expertise on survivor engagement and advocacy;
12. Support and strengthen survivor engagement in existing small arms control initiatives and programmes at government level and within civil society, building relationships of trust and cooperation;
13. Support and build the membership of the Survivors Network through strategic leadership in global and regional campaigns and projects;
14. Facilitate capacity building training for members where appropriate;
15. Coordinate information exchange between the IANSA Secretariat, and the wider network;
16. Advise and assist members of the Survivors Network in their work on policy, advocacy, media, fundraising and networking;
17. Liaise with colleagues and the wider campaign for an Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) and facilitate the network’s involvement in the UN SALW process;
18. Ensure that IANSA’s global statements and positions incorporate the Survivors Network perspective;
19. Liaise between and connect UN and national government officials with members of the Survivors Network;
20. In collaboration with the IANSA Fundraising Officer, IANSA Women’s Network Coordinator and members to identify opportunities and input into the development of related projects and fundraising proposals.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

Essential:
• A minimum of 5 years working on a related issue (small arms control; disability rights; survivor engagement; international network) with strong experience of working in diverse communities at a grass roots level;
• Proven ability to liaise with senior government officials on the issue;
• Understanding of and experience in working within a global network;
• Good computer skills in Windows environment, knowledge of internet communications and command of MS Office applications (Word, Excel, Power Point);
• Experience of working successfully with civil society organisations and ability to motivate partners from a geographical distance;
• Strong leadership skills as well as coaching and mentoring skills;
• Strong analytical, writing and communication skills;
• Fluency in English (written and spoken);
• Ability to work with complex information in politicised environments;
• Experience of working successfully across different cultures;
• Ability to work under pressure and prioritise effectively;
• Experience of representing a civil society organisation at a regional or international level;
• Familiarity with the politics and discourse on gun violence, disarmament and arms control, as well as the international policy environment in which these issues are addressed;
• Ability to travel internationally, as required.

Desirable:
• Good command of languages other than English especially French and/or Spanish;
• Previous work experience in the NGO sector or a good understanding thereof;
• Project management experience.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS
• This post is offered as a 12 month contract, including a 3 month probation period. The contract may be renewable provided funding is secured for the post and satisfactory progress is made.
• The standard working week is 37.5 hours a week. However the demands of the job are likely to be such that a willingness to work longer hours as sometimes required is necessary.
